4 Suggestions When You Feel Stuck in Your Job or Career
Perhaps you’re not as happy as you used to be at work. The fulfillment that you used to receive isn’t there any longer. Maybe you’ve considered changing jobs or careers. Before you make a major move, consider these four suggestions:
Do not compare yourself to others. Comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of unworthiness and not being “good enough.” This can negatively affect the way that we feel about both ourselves and our job. Try to evaluate yourself in your job, independent of your colleagues.
Look inside yourself. Be totally honest. Ask yourself, “Do I feel a sense of happiness or gratification in this role or career?” There is nothing wrong with doing a job strictly for money or prestige. That said, over the long term, if there is no happiness or satisfaction, this job or career will most likely result in burnout or fatigue.
Change it up. Maybe every day feels like the same thing over and over (think of the movie, Groundhog Day). Think of ways that you can change up your routine. Maybe there is a special project that you can tackle. Brainstorm with your boss and colleagues as to things that you might do to rejuvenate your enthusiasm.
Follow the good feelings. Never underestimate a gut feeling. Ask yourself, “Would I be happier if I left this job/career?” See if you get an immediate positive or negative feeling. That might be the answer that you’ve been looking for.
From personal experience, I would advise that you give careful thought to all of your options. Doing something “drastic” or “spur of the moment” without due diligence could potentially lead to a more challenging situation.
